After spending three years as a correspondence manager for the US Senate, Mark Olsen relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he works as a banker associate for J.P. Morgan Private Bank. Heavily involved in his new community, Mark Olsen volunteers with First Tee of East Lake, which is a golf instruction and mentoring program geared toward the youth in Atlanta’s East Lake neighborhood.
As a year-round program, First Tee of East Lake uses the core principles of golf, such as hard work and discipline, for the youth in the area to focus on life skills and academics. They also use golf to help open doors to jobs, business connections, and college scholarships. Since the program began in 1998, more than 1,200 children have participated in the program.
Children enrolled in the program in the program play at the public 9-hole Charlie Yates Golf Course. Volunteers help the students improve their game and serve as role models and mentors. The organization utilizes these volunteers during the school day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., after school from 4:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.
